Bach by Candlelight - February 2016

You will hear famous Bach pieces for solo violin and cello, solos from Well Tempered Clavier and a harpsichord concerto.

Baroque violin - Szbolcs Illés
SZABOLCS ILLÉS studied at Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest. He studied baroque violin and early music presentation led by Dario Luisi and Susanne Scholz in Vienna and Graz. On courses he studied with famous baroque violinists as Enrico Gatti, Marinett Troost, Lucy van Dael or Simon Standage. At Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig studied with Susanne Scholz. In 2009 he gained the Master in Music degree at Royal Conservatory of Brussels in Sigiswald Kuijken’s class. He has been performing as a member of world-famous orchestra, the La Petite Bande. . Since 2008, he has been a concertmaster of the Hof-Musici orchestra which is primarily working on the reconstruction and presentation of baroque operas with authentic instruments, costumes and original settings. He gives concerts with his own ensemble the Accademia Capricciosa and other baroque ensembles (Dolce Risonanza, Cammermusik Potsdam, Concert Royal Köln) in Germany, Austria, Belgium the Czech Republic and other European countries.
Harpsichord - Douglas Mews
DOUGLAS MEWS is a freelance musician in Wellington, teaching organ and harpsichord at the New Zealand School of Music. He graduated from Auckland University with a M.Mus in organ and harpsichord, having studied with the late Anthony Jennings. This was followed by two years' post-graduate harpsichord study with Bob van Asperen at the Hague Conservatorium.
As harpsichordist he has given many recitals in NZ as well as performing with various visiting musicians, including baroque violinist Stanley Ritchie, early flautist Rachel Brown, singer Richard Wistreich, recorder player Peter Holtslag, and violist Nobuko Imai.
As organist he has performed at St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, St Nazaire Cathedral, Beziers, St Jacobi Church, Hamburg, as well as all major venues in NZ.
Baroque cello - Tomas Hurnik
TOMAS HURNIK has a rich musical career performing with Czech symphonies, recording for radio and television, winning various chamber music competitions and taking part in prestigious chamber groups such as Talich Chamber Orchestra. He has played with various period instrument groups such as Musica Florea, Capella Regia Prague and Solamente Naturali with which he performed and toured around Europe.
He is now the associate principal in Christchurch Symphony and continues to be passionate about period instrument playing and organizes and performs in concerts, workshops and master classes of Baroque music in New Zealand.
Baroque violin - Philippa Lodge
PHILIPPA LODGE studied the violin under Nathaniel Vallois at the Birmingham Conservatoire as an undergraduate. She developed a passion for early music and historically informed performance and began studying with Nicolette Moonen. After graduating she was awarded the Corton-Hyde scholarship to persue postgraduate study with Maggie Faultless and Kate Fawcett. After a masterclass with the Amsterdam Quartet she was invited to study with violist Robin Ireland, formerly of the Lindsay Quartet and became a junior fellow of the Birmingham Conservatoire.
Philippa has enjoyed a varied career playing with the Musical and Amicable society as principal viola, the Corelli Consort, and Marches Baroque as an early musician performing on both the violin and viola. Moving to Christchurch in 2013 she is now a member of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and performs around the country and Europe.
